Tech Tip #6: Wi-Fi Troubleshooting Basics

Slow or spotty Wi-Fi is one of the most common complaints we hear. Most of the time it's fixed in under five minutes with a few simple steps.

Step 1: Restart your router and modem

Unplug both your modem and router and wait 30 seconds. Plug the modem in first and wait for it to fully connect, then plug in the router. This clears cached network data and often fixes connection issues on the spot.

Step 2: Check how many devices are connected

Every device on your Wi-Fi shares the same bandwidth. Too many devices streaming or downloading at once? That's your culprit. Disconnect the ones you're not using.

Step 3: Move closer to the router

Walls, floors and appliances all interfere with Wi-Fi signals. If you're working far from the router, try relocating, or consider a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system.

Step 4: Check for outages

Before you troubleshoot further, check your provider's website or app for outages in your area. If the problem is on their end, no amount of restarting will help.
