Tech Tip #5: How to Free Up Storage Space Fast

"Your disk is almost full." If you've seen that message, you know how frustrating it is. Here's how to fix it fast.

Step 1: Find the biggest files

  • Windows: Settings → System → Storage → Cleanup Recommendations shows what's taking up the most space.

  • Mac: Apple Menu → About This Mac → Storage → Manage.

Step 2: Empty the Trash and your Downloads folder

Your Trash and Downloads folder are often hiding gigabytes of forgotten files. Empty the Trash, then sort Downloads by file size to find what you no longer need.

Step 3: Delete duplicate files

Duplicate photos, documents and downloads quietly pile up over time. A free tool like dupeGuru can scan your drive and flag duplicates for you to review and delete.

Step 4: Uninstall programs you don't use

  • Windows: Settings → Apps → Installed Apps.

  • Mac: Drag unused apps from Applications to the Trash.

You might be surprised how much space dormant software takes up.
