Phishing emails are getting more sophisticated, and they're one of the most common ways hackers get into personal and business accounts. Here's what to look for.
Red flag #1: Urgency or threats
"Your account will be closed in 24 hours." "Immediate action required." Scammers create panic so you act without thinking. Legitimate companies rarely demand instant action by email.
Red flag #2: A suspicious sender address
The display name might say "PayPal" or "Your Bank," but check the actual email address. If it's something like support@paypa1-secure.com, it's fake.
Red flag #3: Links that don't match
Before you click any link in an email, hover your mouse over it. The real address appears at the bottom of your browser. If it doesn't match the company's real website, don't click.
Red flag #4: Generic greetings
Legitimate businesses usually address you by name. "Dear Customer" or "Dear User" is a common sign of a mass phishing attempt.
Red flag #5: Unexpected attachments
Never open an attachment you weren't expecting, even if it seems to come from someone you know. When in doubt, call the sender to verify.
The golden rule: when in doubt, delete it. No real company will penalize you for not clicking a suspicious email.
